The legacy of World War II and the political tumult of the late-1960s collide in this French courtroom thriller, which dramatizes the 1975 “trial of the century” of far-left activist Pierre Goldman. Accused of two murders, Goldman pleads not guilty to those charges while freely admitting his roles in armed robberies and non-violent crimes committed in the name of political revolution. Goldman’s combative testimony turns him into a romantic figure of the French left while his young attorney struggles to keep his defense on track. The trial unearths patterns of French antisemitism, racism, and injustice that remain relevant today.
The Goldman Case premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as the opening night selection of their Directors’ Fortnight program; Arieh Worthalter won the César (France’s Oscar) for Best Actor for his live wire performance as Pierre Goldman.
