TPI Certification/More about Golfing Initiative
If you have injured yourself playing golf or have an injury that is preventing you from playing golf, you should be rehabbing with a Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) specialist. The TPI method was designed to return you to golf and get you playing at a higher level than you were before the injury. We analyze 16 different physical tests that are specific to the golf swing. These physical test results combined with your specific swing characteristics help to build your body-swing connection. If you have been working on improving your swing and have not had your body evaluated, you are missing a key piece to the puzzle.

Concussion Blurb:
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in which the brain is injured by an impact or a sudden movement. Concussion by definition means to shake violently. A concussion can occur from any blow to the head, neck, jaw, face, or body that forcibly moves the brain within the skull. When symptoms of a concussion last more than 7-12 days, a Physician will conduct tests to diagnose Post-concussion Syndrome (PCS). Symptoms of PCS includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Headache
  • Memory loss
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Feeling slow
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Heavy head or “mentally foggy”
  • Irritability or mood changes
  • Difficulty in sleep patterns
  • Fatigue or exhaustion
  • Sleeping more or less than usual
  • Inability to concentrate or focus

At SBMC we have Physical Therapists that are trained with current evidence-based practice to treat and aid patients in recovery. Please see the following webpage for additional information on RWJBH’s Concussion program: https://www.rwjbh.org/treatment-care/athlete-screenings/

Bidoex Testing:
When it comes to returning to a sport or labor-intensive job after an injury it is important to ensure your body is ready. Most re-injuries occur because the person was not strong enough to return. The Biodex is the most accurate tool to assess force production in physical rehabilitation. At the end of your testing, you will receive an easy-to-read graph highlighting your physical capacities and limitations. This will help give you the confidence that you are ready to get back to your life.

Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFRT):
After injury or surgery, improving strength and muscle growth is a high priority. However, after injury, most individuals are unable to lift heavy weights to induce muscle adaptation. BFRT allows the strength and hypertrophy phases of rehabilitation to begin earlier. With BFRT, a pneumatic cuff is applied at the top part of the muscle that is being trained. The cuff is inflated to a specific pressure to decrease the blood flow to that muscle. This creates an environment that allows for increased muscle growth.

Dr. Dustin Baldwin is a Physical Therapist, Certified Titleist Performance Institute Specialist (TPI), and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Dustin has a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Drexel University and a Bachelors in Exercise Science from Hofstra University. Through his extensive training and professional experience, Dustin became a youth athlete specialist at his first job as a Physical Therapist in Manhattan. To expand his experience and continue to cultivate knowledge in the profession, Dustin has joined the Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Team here at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. To ensure he strives in evidence-based practice, he participates in continued education designed to improve the quality of care for all individuals who need PT. His main hobby is golf, which led him to pursue his Titleist Performance Institute Certification to help improve the physical ability of individuals of all ages and skill levels who participate in the game of golf. Dustin also enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, playing basketball, and playing flag football.

Dr. Puja Desai is the Supervising Physical Therapist and Certified Musculoskeletal Specialist at SBMC Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Rehabilitation team in the JCC. Puja has her Doctorate in Physical Therapy and Bachelors in Health Sciences from University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. To continue to grow as a skilled clinician, Puja pursued a postdoctoral residency program in Orthopedics. She completed her Orthopedic Residency in 2018 at Arcadia University receiving her Musculoskeletal Certification. The residency provided an opportunity to conduct research, work in academia, observe surgeries, and be trained by multiple Orthopedic Certified Specialists to excel in her skill set. Although her primary interest is in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, she kept her inpatient skills to date by working PRN at Fox Chase Cancer Center. Upon transitioning to SBMC, Puja has been working with both Orthopedic, Sports Medicine, and Post-concussive populations. She is a passionate therapist committed to her patient’s recovery. Outside of Physical Therapy, Puja enjoys traveling, music, spending time with family, creating new recipes, and reading.
