Feature
Saül Birnbaum is a “hidden child” who was separated from his parents at the age of 6 to escape the Holocaust on the Kindertransport. In 1986, Saül (Simon Abkarian, Gett) is on the path to recovery: he runs a successful, movie-themed deli that serves traditional Ashkenazi food. He and his protégé, Joakin, a young Chilean director and refugee from Pinochet’s dictatorship, write and produce a screenplay about Saül’s childhood. When Saül falls in love with a projectionist struggling with her own War-related trauma, his life and cinematic ambitions are thrown into upheaval. This sensitive drama is leavened with romance, comedy, and a love of cinema.
