Feature
The 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann, the architect of the Holocaust, is revisited with new insight in a collaboration between its American director and co-writer, Jake Paltrow, and Israeli co-writer, Tom Shoval. This drama, based on true accounts, tells its story from the perspectives of three largely unrelated people: the Moroccan immigrant in charge of guarding Eichmann, an Israeli police investigator for the prosecution who is a Holocaust survivor, and a 13-year-old recent immigrant from Libya. Expressively shot on period-appropriate Super 16mm film by the eminent Israeli cinematographer, Yaron Scharf (Yossi & Jagger, Footnote), this vividly textured film uses these disparate points of view and a cast of Israel’s finest actors (Tzahi Grad, Joy Reiger, Yoav Levi, and Ami Smolartchik, among others) to recreate a decisive moment in Jewish history and illuminate the uneasy process of assimilation for Diaspora Jews in Israel.
