For many grandparents, having a grandchild is the change to become the parent they didn’t have the time or the energy to be with their own children. Fathers who worked so hard to support their family and traveled for work or who were tired when they came home, now turn into playmates. Mothers, who were busy with the endless tasks of raising children or working outside the home, too often could not find enough time to parent—no matter how hard they tried. But being a grandparent, Isay argues, is the opportunity to turn missed opportunities into delight.
