Adler Aphasia Center

Our Mission

The Adler Aphasia Center at JCC MetroWest provides a therapeutic environment of innovative programs that help people with aphasia and their families reconnect with life.

Long-term rehabilitation is possible. Our research shows people with aphasia benefit in many ways:

  • Improved communication skills
  • Increased confidence
  • Strengthened social connections
  • Enhanced quality of life

We help people through conversation, activities, technology, the arts, and education.  Our programs help our members:

  • Improve communication skills
  • Exercise cognitive skills
  • Build self-esteem
  • Make social connections

Center Fees: $30 per day (less than one-third of the center’s cost)

Scholarships are available – no one is turned away for their inability to pay. You must meet income guidelines to qualify for a scholarship.

Rediscovery: A Day at the Adler Aphasia Center

Members with aphasia enjoy 3 groups a day, including technology, advocacy, handwriting and spelling, drama, movies, photography, healthy living and debate club.
The computer lab provides individualized instruction.
The program meets on a semester basis, twice a week for 15 weeks (3 semesters annually).

Sample Day:

9:30am-10:00am: Coffee Talk
10:00am – 11:00am: First Group Session
11:00am – 12:00pm: Second Group Session
12:00pm -12:30pm: Lunch
12:30pm -1:30pm: Third Group Session

How do we help family caregivers?
The family caregiver support group is facilitated by our life coach and focuses on mutual support and encouragement while building strategies to cope with the challenges of aphasia. Our caregiver support group meets weekly at JCC MetroWest on Thursdays from 12:30 – 1:30pm.

Who is on our staff?
Licensed speech-language pathologists
Trained professionals
Committed volunteers

How do I join the Adler Aphasia Center?
We welcome people of all ages who have been diagnosed with aphasia. If you cannot participate independently, you must be accompanied by a caregiver. Call us to set up a tour where you will learn more about our Center and how it will help in your recovery.

How long can I attend the Center’s programs?
You can stay as long as you choose. Many of our members with aphasia stay for years as they regard the Center as their “home away from home.”

Do you provide transportation to the Center?
Many community agencies provide transportation to our program. We are happy to provide you with a list of resources.

Can I participate in other JCC MetroWest programs?
Participants at the Adler Aphasia Center at JCC MetroWest can enjoy many of the JCC programs. For more information, please contact Gina Goldman, Director, Center for Adult Enrichment at ([email protected]) or call 973-530-3448.

By participating in the Adler Aphasia Center’s Life Skills program, our members with aphasia are able to learn more effective communication strategies- building their language skills and their confidence to return to an active life in the community.
