Juneteenth is a significant day in American history that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States each year on the 19th of June. On this day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln over two years earlier on January 1, 1863, declaring all enslaved people in Confederate states were now free. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, has since become a celebration of African American culture, heritage, and the enduring fight for equality and justice. It is a time for us to reflect, educate, and honor the struggles and achievements of African Americans throughout history. To learn more about Juneteenth, click here.
