JCC MetroWest took a delegation of 59 athletes ages 10-12 to the 2011 Junior Maccabi Games, hosted by the Katz JCC in Cherry Hill, NJ on Sunday, May 22. MetroWest athletes competed in Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Swimming, and Tennis against other JCC teams from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware
Coaches: Eric Katz, Jim McCauley, Mark Lim
Players: Joseph Blum, Zachary Freeman, Spencer Frey, Daniel Greiss, Jonathan Holland, Josh Katz, Harrison Kern, Benjamin Lim, Max McCauley, Elais Neibart, Daniel Stern
The MetroWest Jr. Maccabi baseball team arrived in the 2011 games with a single focus, repeat. Having lost key members from the gold-medal winning 2010 squad, they knew that the road ahead was going to be more difficult but that would only serve as motivation. From the coaches to the returning players to the new additions, gold was always the goal. The boys' families served as fans and witnesses.
Game 1 vs. Delaware: W5-0
Strong pitching and a 5-run 2nd inning proved to be the winning combination for Metrowest. Behind 3 strong innings from Elias Neibart (1 hit, 0R, 5Ks) and one inning from Daniel Greiss (K), Delaware posed little resistance in a 5-0 win. Offense was contributed by Harry Kern (1B, BB, 1 RBI, Run), Josh Katz (1B, 2B, BB, RBI, Run), Max McCauley (1B, 2B, Run), Daniel Greiss (BB, Run), and Benny Lim (HBP, Run). End of game excitement was provided via a 6-3-2 double play to end the game.
The Katz JCC proved to be a formidable team as they cruised to a 10-0 whitewash over MetroWest. Behind their ace, Jared Delargo, allowed only one baserunner, Daniel Stern (BB) and held MetroWest hitless in 3 innings. The MetroWest squad proved that they could learn quick lessons in the eventual rematch in the finals against the same pitcher.
Game 3 (Semi-finals) vs. Kaisserman JCC Team A: W4-3
It was déjà-vu all over again as the Kaisserman team faced MetroWest in the Semi-finals for the second year in a row. This year, the game went into extra frames but MetroWest showed resilience in showcasing strong pitching and timely hitting on its way to a 4-3 win. Josh Katz (3 inn, 6 hits, 0ER, 2 Ks) and Benny Lim (2 inn, 0 hits, 0ER, 3Ks) combined to hold down a strong Kaisserman offense. The offense produced 8 hits and was sparked by a tremendous home-run from the bat of Daniel Stern (HR, BB, 3RBI) in the first inning. Contributions were supplied by Benny Lim (2 hits), Daniel Greiss (Run), Josh Katz (2 hits, Run), Elias Neibart (Single, Run), Max McCauley (Single), and Harry Kern (single, Run).
Eight innings and over 2 1/2 hours of baseball could not settle a winner in the rematch of game 2 between MetroWest and Katz JCC of Cherry Hill. Standout pitching came from Elias Neibart (3inn, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 5Ks), Benny Lim (3inn, 0ER, 1H, 0BB, 5Ks), Josh Katz (1 inn, 0ER, 2Ks) and Daniel Stern (1 inn, 0ER). Offense came from Benny Lim (2H, Run), Daniel Greiss (Single), Josh Katz (2H, BB, RBI), Elias Neibart (2H), and Max McCauley (2H).
Also contributing to the team's success throughout the tournament were Joseph Blum, Zachary Freeman, Spencer Frey, and Jonathan Holland.
Sharing the gold with the host team was the result of the tie. It was a fitting end to another great tournament.
Coaches: Marc Rosenberg, Dan Ravitz

The girls' basketball team took for the most part a new team to the 2011 Junior Maccabi games. The team began preparing for the games with weekly practices beginning in March, leading up to the games in May. The team had many practices which were able to prepare them for the games. The team was comprised of 10 players from both Essex and Morris County. The girls would compete against other teams from Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey.
The first game was against a team from the Harrisburg JCC. The girls came out strong from the opening tip and never looked back. They executed well on offense and played strong defense. The team had a balanced scoring attack with at least 8 girls scoring a basket. In the second half you could see that the girls were really coming together. On many possessions the girls would make the extra pass, resulting in wide open layups. MetroWest beat Harrisburg by a score of 26-10.
The next game would be against the Kaiserman JCC. This was a physical game from the start. MetroWest played tough and strong defense in the first half and was leading by 1 at halftime. Unfortunately in the second half, one of our point guards took an offensive foul and landed on her wrist. Due to her injury, she was out for the remainder of the tournament. The second half was just as physical but the girls played tough until the final buzzer. We lost the game but the girls did not hang their hands.
Our first playoff game was against Bux Mont, last year's gold medal winner. Last year MetroWest played Bux Mont for gold, but came up a little short. This year was a different story. The girls dominated from the opening tip. They played strong defense and executed extremely well on offense. They had a 15 point lead at halftime and never looked back. They would beat Bux Mont and move on to the semifinals, where they would face Cherry Hill.
The semi final game between MetroWest and Cherry Hill was a strong one. The girls were extremely patient on offense by taking their time to set up. They were able to move the ball around and wear down the defense which resulted in many wide open shots. Every time either team made a basket the other team would match it. No team was ever up by more than 5 points. In the last few minute Cherry Hill went on a run and MetroWest wasn't able to catch up. We lost the game but would play for the bronze medal later on in the day.
MetroWest would face JCC on the Palisades for the bronze medal. MetroWest started the game out strong, jumping out to an early lead. Palisades went on a late run and MetroWest was unable to catch up. This was the teams 5th game of the day and the girls were a little exhausted but played hard until the end. They would take 4th place in the tournament.
Although they didn't medal the girls played their hearts out every single minute that they were on the floor. As the day progressed they really came together on the court, which was apparent, especially in their afternoon games.
The girls all had a great experience at the 2011 Junior Maccabi games and look forward to participating in future Maccabi programs together.
With 6 players being able to return to next years squad, MetroWest looks forward to returning to the games, stronger and more experienced with the goal of winning a gold medal.
We can't wait until next year!!!
Coaches: Ira Steinberg, Larry Wieseneck
Players: Zach Gollin, Ben Grinberg, Matt Konop, Jeffrey Nelson, Aidan Pope, Harry Rosen, Cooper Steinberg, Max Weintraub, Brahm Wieseneck
The MetroWest boys' soccer team played three games in the tournament, scoring 6 goals while conceding only 3. The team began on a high note with a win over Greater Washington. The team played Mid-Westchester close in their second preliminary game, ultimately losing by one goal. The team drew the defending champion Bucks County side in the first medal round game. Bucks County had defeated the MetroWest team in 2010 in the gold medal game. The rematch was hard fought by both teams. Regulation and overtime could not determine a winner and the game went to penalty kicks with Bucks County converting more in the end. The team did not hang their heads though. They gave it their all. More important than the results on the field was how the boys acted throughout the day, being great teammates to each other and showing respect for their opponents, referees, and fans. They earned high praises from their coaches.
Coach: Bryan Fiedler
Players: Jessie April, Morgan Darrow, Orli Forster, Samantha Goldman, Zoe Grebin, Peri Lamkin, Lia Mund, Sarah Miller, Ilana Lurie, Lexi Porigow, Ashley Reuter
The MetroWest 12 and under girls' team had a great result in the Cherry Hill games by winning the Silver medal. The most exciting game was the semifinals against a tough Greater Washington team in which Peri Lamkin scored the tying goal in the last minute of regulation time. After a short overtime period, the game went to penalty kicks and the MetroWest girls won with the final kick 11-10. MetroWest lost to a tough Bucks county team in the finals and went home with the silver. It was a team effort by all of the girls and they had a great time on and off the field. Lia Mund anchored the defense, with the support of Jesse April, Ilana Lurie, and Morgan Darrow. We had a strong offensive performance by Peri Lamkin, Ashley Reuter, Lexi Porigow, Sarah Miller, and Orli Forster. Samantha Goldman played both defense and offense and put constant pressure on the other teams. The girls could not have been so successful without Zoe Grebin in the goal.
Coach: Courtney Stec
Players: Michaela Duetsch-Dornfeld, Madeline Frankel, Alexis Gihorski, Kate Gihorski, Kathryn Shepard, Rachel Vogel, Alana Wernick
The MetroWest swim team had an extremely successful Junior Maccabi Games. Each of the seven swimmers swam 3 individual events and 1 relay. MetroWest swimmers medaled in 17 of the 23 events they swam in, with each swimmer earning at least one medal. It was a great day in and out of the pool.
11 Year Old 50 Fly Rachel Vogel 38.70
12 Year Old 100 Breaststoke Alexis Gihorski 1:20.52
Players: Emily Krupnick, Aaron Tucker
The Junior Maccabi Games were a fun and successful day for the MetroWest tennis players. Emily Krupnick dominated the girls' tournament, winning all three of her matches en route to the gold medal. Aaron Tucker won his first match and lost the second.
MetroWest took a delegation of 73 athletes to the Mid Atlantic Junior Maccabi Games on Sunday May 16. The games were hosted by the Kaiserman JCC in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. There were a total of 550 athletes from 15 delegations representing JCC's in Maryland, Baltimore, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. MetroWest took athletes in the following sports:
Coach: Rayni Borinsky
Players: Elan Rom, Elaine Vernoff
We brought a strong tennis team. In the boys 12-under event Elan Rom defeated 3 opponents to capture a gold medal and Elaine Vernoff had little trouble in also winning her first gold medal. Coach Rayni Borinsky was very impressed with their games and work ethic and is looking forward to having them participate in the future JCC Maccabi Games
Manager: Eric Katz
Coaches: Jim McCauley and Mark Lim
Players: Dan Baroff, Andrew Berger, Daniel Berger, Mack Brower, Matthew Dorfschneider, Jake Elgrably, Joshua Katz, Harrison Kern, Ben Lim, Max McCauley, Elias Neibart, Daniel Stern, Matt Timpone
The MetroWest 12U baseball team won the Gold Medal at the 2010 Mid Atlantic Junior Maccabi Games that were held in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area on May 16. The team was managed by Eric Katz who was assisted by coaches Jim McCauley and Mark Lim.
This talented squad, primarily consisting of 10 and 11 year old All-stars began practicing in March and prepared diligently despite often adverse weather conditions and conflicting baseball schedules. In retrospect, the day came quickly and was done in a flash. The recollection of the day, though, will remain with the team and the families who witnessed and shared in the experience. Should anyone ever forget, their memories can be jogged by simply looking at the gold medal and the numerous photographs that were taken by the parents that cheered the team on.
Following a moving opening ceremony that witnessed all of the delegations from the region marching in surrounded by thousands of cheering fans, the playing of our National Anthem and Hatikvah, the MetroWest 12U team lined up at the door of a tiny bus that was more than half-full with the Baltimore team players and coaches. The bus ride was filled with friendly banter. It would be safe to say that few on the bus expected that these two teams would eventually play for the gold medal much later that afternoon. Four games leading to the final had to be decided. Game 1 on the day's schedule pitted Metro West against the powerful Philadelphia "A" team.
Game 1: Metro West vs Philadelphia "A" (L) 11-5
The top of 1st started off promisingly for Metro West when Josh Katz (double) and Dan Baroff (BB, 2SB) scored via fielding miscues by the home team. Philadelphia stormed back in the bottom of the 1st with an 8-hit barrage, plating 11 runs. The scoring was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by two Philly boppers.
In the top of the 3rd, Dan Stern drove in Benny Lim (BB) on a single to right and Max McCauley drove in Josh Katz (single) with a sacrifice fly making the score 11-5. The inning ended on a bizarre 2-4-2 double play when Metro West was unsuccessful on a double-steal attempt with runners on 1st and 3rd. Metro West would avoid most bad luck for the rest of the day.
Team notables:
Josh Katz went 2 for2 with a double and 2 runs scored. Dan Stern and Matthew Timpone had the other 2 hits for Metro West. Dan Baroff walked, stole 2 bases and scored. Andrew Berger pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit while striking out 2.
Game 2: Metro West vs Philadelphia "B" (W) 7-2
Josh Katz took the mound in game 2 with the sting of the opening loss to Philadelphia "A" still fresh. Metro West fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st off an RBI single by the Philly clean-up hitter.
In the 2nd inning, the team from North Jersey came back with 3 runs. Max McCauley (double) scored via a Dan Berger RBI single. The other 2 runs came off opportunistic base-running by Elias Neibart (BB) and Dan Berger.
In the 3rdinning, Metro West struck again with 4 runs. Josh Katz (BB) scored from first base off a Dan Baroff RBI double. Matt Timpone singled to drive in Baroff. Dan Berger capped off the inning with a 2RBI single plating Timpone and Elias Neibart (single).
Team notables:
Dan Berger went 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Elias Neibart had a hit, a walk and scored 2 runs. Dan Baroff had a double, RBI and scored a run. Max McCauley doubled and scored. Matt Timpone singled and scored. Jake Elgrably and Andrew Berger each had a hit. Josh Katz pitched 3 strong innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6. Benny Lim, who turned 11 the week before, pitched the final inning, allowing a run while striking out a batter.
Game 3: Harrisburg vs Metro West - Play-in Game (W) 7-0
Lunch rejuvenated the boys from NJ. The team remained loose and seemed to bond more tightly as a unit after the strong win against the Philly "B" team. Dominant pitching and a balanced offensive attack highlighted the "play-in" game against Harrisburg.
The higher-seeded Metro West squad jumped to 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning and never looked back. Josh Katz (single, SB), Dan Baroff (double), Matt Timpone (error) and Max McCauley (HBP) scored. The eventful bottom half of the inning was highlighted by a 2 run double off the bat of Elias Neibart.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Metro West scored 3 more runs (D. Baroff, M. Timpone and Andrew Berger) with RBIs from Neibart (fielder's choice) and Mack Brower (single).
Team Notables:
Dan Baroff singled and doubled, scoring twice. Matt Timpone reached base on an error and doubled, scored twice and drove in a run. Elias Neibart doubled and drove in 3 runs. Josh Katz singled, stole a base and scored. Mack Brower singled and drove in a run.
The team's impressive offensive output, though, was overshadowed by the power pitching of Dan Baroff. Baroff faced 9 batters and struck out 7 in 3 perfect innings. Dan Berger finished off the overmatched Harrisburg team with a scoreless inning, striking out a batter.
Game 4: Metro West vs Philadelphia "A" - Semifinal (W) 7-3
Payback for the game 1 loss was sweet for the underdog boys from NJ. The confident Philly "A" team was 3-0 and rolling, trampling over the first 3 teams it faced, including Metro West. Just as it had in the first game, Metro West jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Dan Baroff (fielder's choice) raced all the way home on a Matt Timpone RBI double. A hustling Timpone took advantage of an errant throw from the center fielder and scored on the same play. Unlike the first game, though, new pitcher, Max McCauley was able to limit the boys from Philly to only 3 runs in the bottom of the first and settled in to pitch a scoreless 2nd inning.
In the top of 2nd inning, Benny Lim, drove in Elias Neibart with a sacrifice grounder. In the 3rd, Josh Katz and Dan Baroff scored on an RBI single by Dan Stern and a walk to Max McCauley respectively. In the 4th, the duo of Katz and Baroff scored again. This time, Matt Timpone drove in both his teammates with a line single to center. Katz came on to pitch the last 2 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits to the offensive juggernaut.
Team Notables:
Josh Katz singled twice, stole 3 bases and scored twice, including the decisive run on a delayed steal as Dan Baroff got himself intentionally in a rundown between first and second. Dan Baroff walked twice, stole a base and scored 3 times. Matt Timpone doubled, singled, drove in 3 runs and scored. Elias Neibart walked twice, stole 2 bases and scored once. Dan Stern singled, stole a base and drove in a run. Max McCauley walked, stole a base and scored. Benny Lim had a sacrifice and an RBI. Jake Elgrably doubled and Dan Berger singled. Harry Kern made a nice catch in right field.
Game 5: Metro West vs Baltimore - Final and Gold Medal Game (W) 7-2
The coaches from the Baltimore team came to Field #1 surprised to see the Metro West team as its opponent in the finals. After beating the Philadelphia "B" team in its semi-final game, Baltimore was excited to play its bus-mates from Northern NJ and vice-versa. Gold awaited the winner of this game, played to a full 6 innings. A friendly tone (Benny Lim was gifted a Baltimore pin from one of the opposing players) gave way to a highly competitive game until the 5th inning. As the lower-seeded team, Metro West was again the away team.
In the top of the 1st, Dan Berger led off with a single. Dan Baroff drove in Berger with a 2-base RBI shot to left-center. Baltimore answered back with a run scoring double in the bottom of the 1st. Intent on pressing its opponents, Baltimore sent runners to steal bases freely. Catcher, Max McCauley, would have none of that nonsense, throwing out runners at 3rd and 2nd base in the inning.
Baltimore would score again in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly. Metro West had been hitting the ball hard but at the wrong places until the 4th inning. Matt Timpone doubled to right with one out. He advanced to third on a wild pitch setting up some daring base-running. Dan Stern tapped a grounder to the pitcher who looked Timpone back to third (or so he thought) and threw to 1st base. An alert Timpone broke on the play to first. The first baseman stepped on the bag for out number 2 and fired the ball home. Timpone slid; the tag was applied..... SAFE. Tie game.
In the 5th inning, Dan Berger drove in Jake Elgrably (BB) and Benny Lim (BB) with a double. Josh Katz sent D. Berger to third base with an infield single and stole 2nd. Dan Baroff capped off the tournament scoring with a blast over the center field fence for a 3-run home run. The whole Metro West squad converged at home plate to celebrate with their slugger. The team could not celebrate prematurely as Baltimore still had 2 more chances to make up the deficit. In the bottom of the 6th with the score 7-2, Baroff allowed a single to right, the first hit against him all day, and hit the Baltimore #3 hitter with an inside fastball. Dan bore down to strike out the next 2 hitters and got ahead on the #6 batter 0-2. The batter connected on the next pitch but 2nd baseman Andrew Berger settled under and squeezed the ball for the final out. GAME OVER, TOURNAMENT OVER.
The team members rushed out to 3rd base to celebrate the win, the gold and the spirit of unity that the Jr. Maccabi games brought out. The parents and family members celebrated, first on the sidelines and then out on the field with their sons. The coaches heaved sighs of relief and smiled broadly knowing that they took part in and were witnesses to pure joy. The Baltimore team, although dejected immediately at the loss, perked up during the medal ceremony, appreciating the accomplishment of winning silver in a strong field of participants.
Team notables:
Dan Baroff doubled and homered, driving in 4 runs. Dan Berger singled and doubled, drove in 2 runs and scored twice. Josh Katz, singled, stole a base and drove in a run. Matt Timpone doubled, walked and scored a run. Jake Elgrably and Benny Lim walked and scored a run each. Matt Dorfschneider singled. Matt Timpone and Dan Baroff shared pitching duties, each going 3 innings. Timpone allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, striking out 3. Baroff shut out the opponents, allowing a lone single while striking out 4 batters. Dorfschneider and Katz ran down and caught numerous balls in left and centerfield, respectively.
At the medal ceremony, the team stood together, each player accepting his gold medal from Manager Katz. The boys were asked to decide how they were to arrive home: with their families or with the team on the bus in which they arrived. There was no hesitation- they chose the team bus for more celebration and to enjoy each other's company one more time. With Coach McCauley keeping the peace and Coach Lim in a haze, the bus ride home was like the day, filled with noisy 12 and under boys laughing, singing, telling jokes, and goofing off, but knowing that the day was a special one-a day that may never be duplicated. Or can it? The Maccabi Games for 16U are only a few years away.....

The MetroWest athletes had many amazing swims, some swimmers overcame fears of competing in different events and others stepped up to the block with confidence when asked to do an extra event or something they do not normally swim. Team spirit was a big part of the day. From a coaches perspective it was really nice to see our swimmers from different teams come together and cheer each other on. Overall we did a great job and everyone enjoyed every aspect of the day. Each athlete returned home with at least one medal.

The MetroWest boys' soccer team had a very successful Junior Maccabi tournament, ultimately earning silver medals. The team, which went undefeated until the gold medal match, tallied 11 goals in 6 games and posted two shutouts.
A key to MetroWest's success was the solid and reliable play from their defensive unit, who allowed only 3 goals in the team's first 5 games. The defense was led by goalie Zach Steinberg, sweeper Griffin Lanel, and stopper Aidan Pope, who all played almost every minute of the tournament. Also contributing to this strong defense were Brahm Weiseneck, Max Weintraub, Jonathan Klausner, and Noah Nazmiyal. Many of these players were asked to play in positions they were not accustomed to and really did a great job stepping up for the team.
For the offense, Ben Weintraub scored 6 goals including a hat trick against the Kaiserman JCC and the team's only 2 goals in the semi final match against Mid Westchester. Also netting goals were Shaun Spielberger (2), Noah Nazmiyal (1), Griffin Lanel (1), and Cooper Steinberg (1).
The team's best game of the tournament was their final qualifying match against defending gold medal winners, Bucks County. The boys really showed they had come together as a team and it was great to see. This game saw strong midfield play from Max Kraidelman, Cole Charney, Shaun Spielberger, and Zach Ames. It was a hard played game from both teams and ended in a 1-1 draw. Cooper Steinberg's goal in this game would prove to be the only one scored on Bucks County in the whole tournament. The Pennsylvania team would go on to beat MetroWest in the championship game and repeat with gold.
The boys' soccer team was proud to bring the silver back home to the JCC and looks forward to representing MetroWest again next year in the Junior Maccabi Games.
Coaches: Evan Bashoff, Steve Cohen

The boys basketball team had a terrific day at the Jr. Maccabi Games in Philadelphia. After a long early morning bus ride, the team had some downtime to enjoy the opening ceremonies and relax before beginning the day's tournament. We played our games at the beautiful Friend's Central School, which had three different gyms with basketball courts.
During the preliminary round, we won our first two games and then lost, in overtime, in our third game. Based on our 2-1 record in the preliminary round, we advanced to the playoffs as the #5 seed(8 out of 14 teams made the playoffs). Unfortunately, in the first round of the playoffs, we lost a hard fought game to the #4 seed.
All members of the basketball team enjoyed the day, and the experience of being part of Jr. Maccabi Games.

The girl's basketball team had an amazing tournament at the 2010 Junior Maccabi games, returning home with a silver medal and a record of 4-2. The team was comprised of 9 strong and talented players from the surrounding towns. Each and every member of the team contributed heavily to the team's success. The team began preparing for the games with practices beginning in March leading up to the games in May. In addition to practices on a weekly basis the girls also participated in scrimmages against local teams.
The girls were coached by former Metrowest Maccabi basketball player, Marina Miniovich. Marina just recently finished her basketball career at Randolph High School. Marina was assisted by friend and high school teammate Lauren Fitzgerald. With Marina and Lauren's basketball knowledge and playing experience, they prepared the girls for the games with weekly productive practices, while also teaching the girls the importance of teamwork, good sportsmanship and fairplay. The tournament was comprised of 8 competitive teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
After opening ceremonies, which were held on the field of the Kaiserman JCC, the girls headed into the gym for their first game, which was against the Harrisburg JCC. The girls came out strong from the opening tip and never looked back. They executed well on offense and played strong defense making it extremely difficult for Harrisburg to score. Their defense held Harrisburg to only 4 points all game and the girls were victorious beating Harrisburg by a score of 22-4.
Their next game would be against a very strong team from the Katz JCC in Cherry Hill, last years Silver Medal winners. After the opening tip we could tell that this was going to be a close game and it was. The game came down to the final second and Cherry Hill ended up winning by a score of 11-10.
Despite the loss, the girls did not hang their heads and were ready for their next match against the Kaiserman JCC, this years host community. The girls came out strong and defeated Kaiserman by a score of 14-8.
Based on their record of 2-1, the girls went into the playoffs as the#2 seed. Their first playoff game would be against JCC on the Palisades, a team only 30 minutes away from JCC Metrowest. The girls played strong all game and beat Palisades by a score of 34-16. The girls played extremely well as a team. They had a lot of fast breaks which resulted in a lot of easy baskets and they played strong defense. With this win, the girls would advance to the semi-finals where they would again face Cherry Hill.
The girls were ready and up to the challenge of facing Cherry Hill and were determined to make the outcome of this game different than the first. This was a close game with no team being up by more than 4 points. Metrowest played strong defense all game and the defense was led by their post players who got many key rebounds both on the offense and defensive side of the ball. The score was tied at the end of regulation, resulting in a 1 minute overtime. Metrowest scored a basket at the beginning of overtime and held Cherry Hill scoreless, advancing to the championship game.
The girls would face Bux-Mont, last year's gold medal winners. They faced a strong Bux-Mont team, who was made up of all 12 year olds, while our team, were made up of primarily 10 and 11 year olds. They played the same way they had all tournament, as a team, never giving up and giving 110% every minute that they were on the floor. They lost the game by a score of 23-16 but did not hang their heads. They would return home with a silver medal.
Every player contributed to their silver medal. Lots of players played positions they aren't used to playing, stepping up for the team. Whether it was by scoring, passing, playing defense or cheering from the bench, each and every one of the girls contributed to the teams accomplishments.
Metrowest was led on offense by 12 year olds Jordan Schenker and Leia Kessler. Both Kessler and Schenker were starters on this year's middle school team at Solomon Schechter. They brought their experience of playing primarily with 13 and 14 year olds and heavily contributed to the team's success. Kessler used her speed and very strong ball handling skills taking the ball to the basket many times while also making several jump shots throughout the entire tournament. Schenker made several 3 point shots as well as many jump shots, scoring many points in all 6 games.
Guards Kayla Wolf and Jamie Handwerker pushed the ball up the floor throughout the entire tournament, making several key passes. Both Wolf and Handwerker set some good screens, moved extremely well without the ball, getting open and making several layups as well as jump shots.
Metrowest's defense was led by center Ally Langendorff and guard/forward Sammy Shapiro. Langendorff had many rebounds throughout the tournament, including several key rebounds in Metrowest's overtime win against Cherry Hill. Shapiro played extremely agressive on defense while also making good passes, resulting in many easy baskets for the team.
Also making significant contributions to the team were Esther Fields, Yuval Ganot and Emily Lasoff. They played strong on defense, especially down low, keeping the opposing players outside of the key.
With 6 players being able to return to next years squad, Metrowest looks forward to returning to the games next year, bigger, stronger and more experienced, with the goal of winning a gold medal.
A good time was had by all. We can't wait for next year!!!
