New Jewish Holiday Operations Policies

The JCC Board of Trustees unanimously approved a change in the agency's Jewish holiday operations policies at its February 2012 meeting, after several months of review by a Board-established task force working in consultation with rabbinical leaders of the MetroWest Jewish community. Under the new policy, JCC Health and Wellness facilities, as well as select other programs will be open and available to members on some Jewish holidays during which the agency has previously been closed. JCC policy changes will not affect operations on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, the evening of the first Passover Seder and the entire day of the second Seder, during which the Leon & Toby Cooperman JCC Building and all of its programs will continue to be closed.

"The establishment of the Jewish Holiday Operations Task Force by the JCC Board was a response to loud and clear feedback from many of our Jewish members," stated Joyce Goldstein, Co-Chair of the JCC MetroWest Board of Trustees. "In our continually evolving Jewish community, uniformity, even within denominations, but especially for those who are ‘unaffiliated,' is no longer a norm. In a certain sense, today, all Jews are ‘Jews-by-choice' - meaning that each Jew ‘chooses' how he/she observes, celebrates, commemorates, and practices his/her Judaism."

The Task Force, whose members cut across all denominations and included two MetroWest rabbis, recognized that the JCC is a "...pluralistic Jewish agency serving a community with a diverse constituency of Jews and Jewish practices." The Task Force's report recommended this change in JCC policy in an effort to be "...attractive to a larger segment of the Jewish community who either stay away or choose to leave the JCC due to the current holiday operations policies, which do not value their Jewish practice choices." The Task Force concluded that, "A change in policy is also necessary to assure that certain segments of that [Jewish] constituency remain connected to the Jewish community via programs and services they need/desire, in hope that this connection will lead to increased Jewish involvement."

The JCC will observe the following schedule of building operation hours on Jewish holidays (changes are highlighted):

JCC MetroWest takes pride in infusing strong Jewish content across our broad programmatic landscape. Among many others, JCC MetroWest's accomplishments in Jewish education include: receiving the 2012 International Florence Melton Award for excellence in Jewish Education programming for our Melton Adult Mini-School Jewish education program, which serves 160 participants at seven sites, including six area synagogues; implementing the Ethical Start Judaic curriculum in our Early Childhood program; providing a network of Jewish education programs for older adults via the Amelia & Ephraim Hirschhorn Senior Adult Jewish Education Program offered at 19 area synagogues and the JCC; hosting an annual Synagogue Showcase to promote synagogue affiliation; and engaging young families in Tikkun Olam projects via our annual Mitzvah March at Camp Deeny Riback.

The new policies will take effect for the upcoming Pesach (Passover) holiday in regard to the operations of JCC Health, Fitness, and certain Aquatics programs & facilities.

The JCC will close at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 6th (first Seder night) and remain closed for the entire day on Saturday, April 7th (second Seder night), but will be open for the remainder of the Passover holiday. The impact of the policy changes on other agency programs (i.e. Early Childhood, Kids Club, Senior Adult Programs, Special Needs programs, etc.) is currently being reviewed. These changes, as well as the entire calendar of JCC operations for the remainder of 2012 through June 2013 will be announced as soon as the review process is complete. Any changes in holiday operations for programs other than Health, Fitness, and certain Aquatics programs and facilities will take effect beginning September 2012. Please visit www.jccmetrowest.org, watch for email blasts, and check posters at the Leon & Toby Cooperman JCC for updated information.
